Resumo

Depois de uma breve apresentação do AzLabOvar por Gil Godinho, a moderadora desta segunda sessão, Tânia Guimarães, lançou o tema “Turismo Criativo”, estabelecendo a sua relação com algumas iniciativas já implementadas pelo município de Ovar, no que diz respeito à valorização e divulgação do património azulejar através da oferta de atividades que envolvem os visitantes e turistas num processo criativo e de maior proximidade com o património da cidade.

A CREATOUR, um projeto do Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra, representado por Sílvia Silva e Tiago Castro, apresentou a sua rede de projetos de turismo criativo, na qual as entidades piloto assumem um papel de destaque, contribuindo activamente para o sucesso do projeto. As actividades promovidas, no âmbito do turismo criativo, são construídas com base nas tradições locais, aptidões, conhecimentos e práticas artísticas emergentes, ambicionado contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável das comunidades locais em todo o país.

No seguimento desta apresentação, a CREATOUR, lançou o convite a duas entidades para partilharem as suas experiências e explicar as iniciativas que desenvolvem.

A sessão contou com a apresentação de dois projectos da rede CREATOUR: Caldas Creative Tourism e os tours Alter Egos de Bordallo, Viver Malhoa e Criação na Praça, representado por Mariana Calçada; e o projeto de investigação “Tile your Visit”, incluído na dissertação de mestrado de Ivana Stevic, e que agora continua na sua tese Doutoramento em Gestão e Planeamento em Turismo da Universidade de Aveiro.

No debate final incidiu sobretudo em questões relacionadas com os mecanismos de financiamento existentes e direcionados para agentes privados e associações culturais; e validação de conteúdos técnicos e científicos associados às experiências apresentadas e metodologias adotadas.

A sessão terminou com um workshop criativo promovido por um agente local, “Gaby a minha Casa”, que propôs a criação e pintura de um “azulejo” utilizando os ingredientes do Pão-de-Ló de Ovar. A ideia base constituiu na criação de um “cartão de visita” utilizando estes dois elementos, obtendo assim um azulejo de Pão-de-Ló!

CREATIVE TOURISM: KNOWING TERRITORIES WITH A FOCUS ON EXPERIENCES

Session overview

After a brief presentation of AzLabOvar by Gil Godinho, the second session moderator, Tânia Guimarães, launched the theme “Creative Tourism”, establishing its relationship with some initiatives already implemented by the Ovar municipality, regarding the valorization and dissemination of the azulejo (tile) heritage through the offer of activities that involve visitors and tourists in a creative process and a greater proximity to the city’s heritage.

CREATOUR, a project of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, represented by Sílvia Silva and Tiago Castro, presented its network of creative tourism projects, in which the pilot entities play a leading role, contributing actively to the success of the project. The promoted activities in the field of creative tourism are built on local traditions, skills, knowledge and emerging artistic practices, aiming to contribute to the sustainable development of local communities throughout the country.

Following this presentation, CREATOUR launched an invitation to two entities to share their experiences and explain the initiatives they develop.

The session included the presentation of two CREATOUR projects: Caldas Creative Tourism and the tours Alter Egos de Bordallo, Viver Malhoa and Criação na Praça, represented by Mariana Calçada; and the research project “Tile your Visit”, included in Ivana Stevic’s master’s dissertation, and which now continues in her doctoral thesis in Management and Planning in Tourism of the University of Aveiro.

The final debate focused mainly on issues related to existing funding mechanisms directed to private agents and cultural associations; and validation of technical and scientific contents associated to the presented experiences and methodologies adopted.

The session ended with a creative workshop promoted by a local agent, “Gaby a minha Casa”, who proposed the creation and painting of a “azulejo” using the ingredients of the Ovar Pão-de-Ló (sponge cake). The idea was to create a “business card” using these two elements, thus obtaining an azulejo de Pão-de-Ló!

Tânia Guimarães é Técnica de turismo na Câmara Municipal de Ovar desde 2015 (ano de criação do Serviço de Turismo). É licenciada em Turismo, Lazer e Património (2011) e mestre em Lazer, Património e Desenvolvimento (2013), pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. Realizou-se os estágios curricular (2013) e profissional (2014) na entidade onde atualmente exerce funções.

CREATOUR – “Creative Tourism Destination Development in Small Cities and Rural Areas”  (Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra) is an incubator/demonstration and multidisciplinary research initiative, supporting collaborative research processes. The three-year project aims to connect the cultural /creative and tourism sectors through the development of an integrated research and application approach to catalyzing creative tourism in small cities and rural areas throughout Portugal. + INFO

In this AzLab, Sílvia Silva and Tiago Castro will represent CREATUR, highlighting the Caldas Creative Tourism projects with the Destino Caldas Association, represented by Mariana Calaça and Nicola Henriques; VIC // Ossos do Ofício, with Aveiro Arts House, represented by Hugo Branco; and Tile Your Visit with Ivana Stevic.

Tânia Guimarães is a tourism technician at Ovar City Council since 2015 (the same year that the Tourism Service was created). She holds a degree in Tourism, Leisure and Heritage (2011) and a Master’s Degree in Leisure, Heritage, and Development (2013), from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. Her curricular (2013) and professional (2014) internships were carried out in the entity where she currently works.

A segunda sessão do #AzLabOvar é dedicada a um dos temas do momento — o turismo —, abordando-se a complexidade deste fenómeno a partir de uma reflexão sobre a importância do turismo criativo* na salvaguarda e protecção do património, neste caso o património azulejar oitocentista em Ovar.

Contando com a participação do projecto CREATUR, o AzLabOvar#02 começa por questionar de que forma o turismo potencia a reabilitação urbana e se as experiências criativas traduzem uma maior proximidade e relação entre o visitante e o património, procurando perspectivar o futuro do património e do turismo em cidades de pequena dimensão.

Por fim, e ponto em prática as “experiências” mencionadas durante a sessão, os participantes serão convidados a  visitar uma unidade de produção de pão-de-ló de Ovar (“Gaby a minha casa”) que, a par do azulejo, é uma das maiores riquezas da cidade. A ideia é criarem um “cartão de visita” utilizando estes dois elementos, obtendo assim um azulejo de Pão-de-Ló!

The second #AzLabOvar is dedicated to one of the topical subjects of the moment — tourism —, focusing on the complexity of this phenomenon from a reflection on the importance of creative tourism* in the heritage safeguarding and protection, in this case, the 18th century azulejo heritage in Ovar.

With the participation of the project CREATUR, AzLabOvar#02 begins by questioning in what way tourism promotes urban rehabilitation and if the creative experiences translate greater proximity and relation between visitor and heritage, looking for a future of heritage and tourism in small towns.

Finally, and putting in practice the “experiences” mentioned during the session, the participants will be invited to visit a production unit of Ovar pão-de-ló (sponge cake) (“Gaby a minha casa”) that, along with the azulejo (tile), is one of the greatest riches of the city. The idea is to create a “business card” using these two elements, thus obtaining an azulejo de Pão-de-Ló!

Resumo

A sessão inaugural do AzLabOvar começou com uma breve apresentação da iniciativa por Isabel Ferreira e Rosário Salema de Carvalho, que enquadraram o seminário nos seus cinco anos de actividade, explicando as razões que estiveram na origem da sua expansão para Ovar.

Tomando a palavra logo de seguida, as irmãs Catarina Almada Negreiros e Rita Almada Negreiros explicaram, complementando-se entre si, os vários projectos de revestimentos de azulejo que têm desenvolver, centrados maioritariamente em Lisboa. Se os designados azulejos cinéticos marcam uma perspectiva de trabalhos do atelier CAN RAN, com aplicações, entre outros locais, na estação São Sebastião II do Metropolitano de Lisboa (2009) e “Vai-Vem”, nos muros laterais do elevador da Bica (2013), a intervenção “Cota Zero”, no átrio da Estação Sul e Sueste (2011) reflecte uma outra forma de entendimento do azulejo, tal com as obras mais recentes, que exploram a construção e desconstrução de padrões, do século XVII, em “5pm” nos muros junto ao Paço da Rainha intitulado (2016) e do século XIX no revestimento exterior de um imóvel na Av. da Índia (2016). Por fim, e ainda tendo como referente o reticulado azulejar aplicado num contexto de preenchimento de lacuna, foi apresentado um projecto em estudo para o interior de um templo.

O debate final foi longo e com perguntas muito variadas, quer sobre a azulejaria, quer sobre os interesses arquitectónicos das duas convidadas, ligando muitos dos temas em discussão à própria cidade de Ovar.

Session overview

AzLabOvar inaugural session began with a brief presentation of this initiative by Isabel Ferreira and Rosário Salema de Carvalho, who set the seminar in its five years of activity, explaining the reasons that led to its expansion to Ovar.

Taking the floor shortly, the sisters Catarina Almada Negreiros and Rita Almada Negreiros explained, complementing each other, the various projects of azulejo (tile) coverings that they have developed, mostly in Lisbon. If the so-called kinetic tiles mark a work perspective of the CAN RAN architecture, with applications, among others, in the São Sebastião II station of the Lisbon Underground (2009) and “Vai-Vem”, on the side walls of the Bica elevator (2013), the “Cota Zero” intervention, in the lobby of the South and Southeast river station (2011) reflects another form of understanding the tile, such as the more recent works that explore the construction and deconstruction of 17th century patterns, in “5pm” on the walls next to the queen’s palace (a 2016 tribute to Catherine of Braganza), and of the 19th century in the exterior covering of a building in Índia Avenue (2016). Finally, and still having as a reference the reticulate tiles applied in a context of gap filling, a project under study for the interior of a temple was presented.

The final debate was long and with varied questions, both on the tiles and on the architectural interests of the two guests, linking many of the topics under discussion to the city of Ovar itself.

Licenciada em Arquitectura pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Lisboa, em 1996, Catarina Almada Negreiros estagiou no atelier londrino MUF: ART/ARCHITECTURE entre 1997 e 1999. Em 2002 concluiu o mestrado em arquitectura na G.S.D. Universidade de Harvard e, em 2011, o mestrado em Comunicação e Artes, na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Anos antes, em 2000, tinha fundado, com a sua irmã Rita Almada Negreiros, os ateliers de Santa Catarina, em Lisboa.

In 2002 she completed her master’s degree in architecture at G.S.D. Harvard University and, in 2011, the master’s degree in Communication and Arts, at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Years before, in 2000, she had founded, with her sister Rita Almada Negreiros, the Santa Catarina ateliers, in Lisbon.

Depois de várias passagens por ateliers de arquitectura em Londres, Paris e Barcelona, Catarina Almada Negreiros e Rita Almada Negreiros regressam a Lisboa no ano 2000, onde fundam os Ateliers de Santa Catarina, um centro criativo que promove trabalhos interdisciplinares entre arquitectos, artistas e designers. O trabalho das duas arquitectas – CAN RAN arquitectura – inicia-se neste contexto, e as propostas de renovação arquitectónica destacam-se também pela utilização do azulejo enquanto elemento transformador dos espaços em que se insere.

Nesta primeira sessão do AzLab em Ovar, e na sequência do AzLab#44, dedicada aos seus projectos em azulejo, Catarina e Rita Almada Negreiros propõem uma análise detalhada a algumas das suas obras em Lisboa, destacando a intervenção “Cota Zero”, no novo átrio da Estação Sul e Sueste (2011); o revestimento “Vai-Vem”, aplicado nos muros laterais do elevador da Bica (2013); o tratamento plástico de um muro junto ao Paço da Rainha intitulado “5pm” (2016); ou o revestimento exterior de um imóvel na Av. da Índia (2016). Para além destes trabalhos já finalizados, Catarina e Rita Almada Negreiros irão ainda abordar algumas experiências que estão a desenvolver e outros projectos futuros.

After several visits to architecture studios in London, Paris, and Barcelona, Catarina Almada Negreiros and Rita Almada Negreiros returned to Lisbon in 2000, where they founded the Santa Catarina Ateliers, a creative center that promotes interdisciplinary work between architects, artists, and designers. The work of the two architects – CAN RAN arquitectura – begins in this context, and the architectural renewal proposals stand out also for the use of the azulejo (tile) as a space transforming element in which it is inserted.

In this first session of AzLab in Ovar, and following the AzLab#44, dedicated to their tile projects, Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros propose a detailed analysis of some of their works in Lisbon, highlighting the intervention “Cota Zero”, in the new atrium of the Sul and Sueste Station (2011); the covering “Vai-Vem”, applied on the side walls of the Bica lift (2013); the plastic treatment of a wall next to the Palace of the Queen entitled “5pm” (2016); or the exterior covering of a property on Av. da Índia (2016). In addition to these already completed works, Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros will also discuss some experiences they are developing and other future projects.
