Mathilda Larsson Dias Coutinho [Laboratório HERCULES, Universidade de Évora]

Mathilda Larsson Dias Coutinho, Conservadora-restauradora de Cerâmica e Vidro, doutorou-se em Conservação e Restauro na especialidade de Ciências da Conservação pela Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Continuou a investigação como bolseira pós-doutoramento na Unidade de Investigação VICARTE – Vidro e Cerâmica para as Artes, sobre biodeterioração de cerâmica, o tema do doutoramento, e sobre materiais e técnicas aplicadas na produção de cerâmica vidrada. 

Atualmente é investigadora do Laboratório HERCULES, da Universidade de Évora, onde desenvolve duas linhas de investigação: a biodeterioração e a cerâmica. Na vertente da biodeterioração investiga a conservação de objectos expostos à colonização biológica por líquenes, no projecto PROGnostic: PRedictive mOdels for the control of lichen Growth on built heritage. Paralelamente, está a desenvolver um projecto sobre os materiais e técnicas de produção utilizados na produção cerâmica artística do final do século XIX.

Invited speaker:
Mathilda Larsson Dias Coutinho [Laboratório HERCULES, Universidade de Évora]

Mathilda Larsson Dias Coutinho completed her PhD in Conservation Sciences at FCT (NOVA University, Lisbon) (2015). She was post-doctoral fellow at VICARTE – Glass and Ceramic for the Arts, working on ceramics biodeterioration as well as materials and techniques applied to the glazed ceramics production. 

Currently, she is a researcher at the HERCULES Laboratory, Universidade de Évora, developing two research lines. Concerning biodeterioration, her main project entitled PROGnostic: PRedictive mOdels for the control of lichen Growth on built heritage, aims to discover the influence of environmental conditions on lichen colonization dynamics and biodeterioration processes. On ceramics, she is investigating the materials and techniques used in the late 19th century artistic ceramics production.

A investigadora do Laboratório Hercules, Mathilda Larsson Dias Coutinho, partilha os primeiros resultados de uma investigação em curso, mostrando de que modo a articulação entre a história da arte e as ciências físicas e dos materiais pode contribuir para lançar um novo olhar e redescobrir os revestimentos azulejares exteriores de cúpulas, coruchéus e pináculos, contribuindo para a sua preservação.

In the next AzLab, we are invited to look up! Have you noticed the quantity and diversity of tiles applied on domes and spires, and that go so often unnoticed? 

The researcher from the Hercules Laboratory, Mathilda Larsson Dias Coutinho, shares the first results of an ongoing investigation about the exterior tilework of domes, spires and pinnacles. Through the articulation between art history and physical and materials sciences, the ongoing research aims to rediscover these coverings, contributing to their preservation.
