Abstract

The ‘Sea and River Fish Shop’ belonging to IJ. Rienstra opened on Reguliersdwarsstraat in Amsterdam in September 1921. A series of ten tile pictures with fishing boats, fish markets and fishermen in regional dress formed a decorative feature high up on the long walls  of this shop.

Shops selling foodstuffs were regularly fitted out with tiles as they had to be kept scrupulously clean for hygienic reasons. But also the decorative possibilities of tiles were fully exploited by the use of tile pictures with appropriate designs.
