Licenciada em Arquitectura pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Lisboa, em 1996, Catarina Almada Negreiros estagiou no atelier londrino MUF: ART/ARCHITECTURE entre 1997 e 1999. Em 2002 concluiu o mestrado em arquitectura na G.S.D. Universidade de Harvard e, em 2011, o mestrado em Comunicação e Artes, na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Anos antes, em 2000, tinha fundado, com a sua irmã Rita Almada Negreiros, os ateliers de Santa Catarina, em Lisboa.

Licenciada em Arquitectura pela Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa, em 1994, Rita Almada Negreiros estagiou nos ateliers Wilmotte & Associés, em Paris (1994-1997) e BCQ Arquitectes (1997-1998) e ainda no atelier do arquitecto Jordi Castel (1998-1999), estes últimos em Barcelona. Em 2000, fundou, com a sua irmã Catarina Almada Negreiros, os ateliers de Santa Catarina, em Lisboa.

Catarina Almada Negreiros
CAN
Graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon in 1996, Catarina Almada Negreiros did an internship at the London studio MUF: ART/ARCHITECTURE between 1997 and 1999. In 2002 she completed her master’s degree in architecture at G.S.D. Harvard University and, in 2011, the master’s degree in Communication and Arts, at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Years before, in 2000, she had founded, with her sister Rita Almada Negreiros, the Santa Catarina ateliers, in Lisbon.

Depois de várias passagens por ateliers de arquitectura em Londres, Paris e Barcelona, Catarina Almada Negreiros e Rita Almada Negreiros regressam a Lisboa no ano 2000, onde fundaram os Ateliers de Santa Catarina, um centro criativo que promove trabalhos interdisciplinares entre arquitectos, artistas e designers. O trabalho das duas arquitectas – CAN RAN arquitectura – inicia-se neste contexto, e as propostas de renovação arquitectónica destacam-se também pela utilização do azulejo enquanto elemento transformador dos espaços em que se insere.

No AzLab#44, dedicado aos seus projectos em azulejo, Catarina e Rita Almada Negreiros propõem uma análise detalhada a algumas das suas obras em Lisboa, destacando a intervenção “Cota Zero”, no novo átrio da Estação Sul e Sueste (2011); o revestimento “Vai-Vem”, aplicado nos muros laterais do elevador da Bica (2013); o tratamento plástico de um muro junto ao Paço da Rainha intitulado “5pm” (2016); ou o revestimento exterior de um imóvel na Av. da Índia (2016). Para além destes trabalhos já finalizados, Catarina e Rita Almada Negreiros irão ainda abordar algumas experiências que estão a desenvolver e outros projectos futuros.

After several visits to architecture studios in London, Paris, and Barcelona, Catarina Almada Negreiros and Rita Almada Negreiros returned to Lisbon in 2000, where they founded the Santa Catarina Ateliers, a creative center that promotes interdisciplinary work between architects, artists, and designers. The work of the two architects – CAN RAN arquitectura – begins in this context, and the architectural renewal proposals stand out also for the use of the azulejo (tile) as a space transforming element in which it is inserted.

In AzLab#44, dedicated to their tile projects, Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros propose a detailed analysis of some of their works in Lisbon, highlighting the intervention “Cota Zero”, in the new atrium of the Sul and Sueste Station (2011); the covering “Vai-Vem”, applied on the side walls of the Bica lift (2013); the plastic treatment of a wall next to the Palace of the Queen entitled “5pm” (2016); or the exterior covering of a property on Av. da Índia (2016). In addition to these already completed works, Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros will also discuss some experiences they are developing and other future projects.

UMA COLECÇÃO DE AZULEJO

Resumo

Regressando ao tema do coleccionismo, o AzLab#43 centrou-se na colecção de azulejos do arquitecto José Maria Nepomuceno, que está a ser estudada no âmbito dos projectos digitais do ARTIS – o Az Infinitum e o Orion.

Depois da introdução de Rosário Salema de Carvalho, que explicou o conceito deste AzLab, Vera Mariz começou por apresentar de forma sumária os dois projectos, revelando de que modo nasceu a ideia de articulação entre ambos e o trabalho que está actualmente a ser desenvolvido. Fábio Ricardo, bolseiro de investigação do Az Infinitum e do Orion, focou a sua apresentação nas tarefas que está a realizar, mostrando o modo de funcionamento da base de dados interrelacional que suporta o Orion, assim como as metodologias inerentes e partilhando com o público os sucessos e as dificuldade que um trabalho desta natureza comporta.

A última parte do AzLab foi dedicada a questões de aprofundamento de investigação, com Vera Mariz a revelar uma série de novos dados relacionados com os leilões das colecções Nepomuceno e Ameal, e com Rosário Salema de Carvalho a mostrar como, através do Az Infinitum, se pode aprofundar o estudo das proveniências, entendidas no contexto desta plataforma, como os locais de origem dos revestimentos.

O debate foi, como sempre, muito participativo, e o entusiasmo dos três participantes por este crossover entre projectos digitais acabou por contagiar o público, que quis contribuir com sugestões de investigação e perguntas mais abrangentes sobre o conhecimento das proveniências de outras colecções de azulejo em Portugal.

A COLLECTION OF AZULEJO

Session overview

Going back to the theme of collections, AzLab#43 was centered on the azulejo (tile) collection of the architect José Maria Nepomuceno, which is being studied in the context of the ARTIS digital projects – Az Infinitum and Orion.

After the introduction of Rosário Salema de Carvalho, who explained the concept of this AzLab, Vera Mariz began by summarizing the two projects, revealing how the idea of articulation between the two was born and the work that is currently being developed. Fábio Ricardo, a research fellow at Az Infinitum and Orion, focused his presentation on the tasks he is doing, showing how the interrelational database that supports Orion works, as well as the inherent methodologies, and sharing with the public successes and difficulties that a work of this nature entails.

The last part of AzLab was dedicated to deepening research questions, with Vera Mariz revealing a series of new data related to the auctions of the Nepomuceno and Ameal collections, and Rosário Salema de Carvalho showing how, through Az Infinitum, we can further the study of provenances, understood in the context of this platform, as the places of origin of the coverings.

The debate was, as always, very participative, and the enthusiasm of the three participants for this crossover between digital projects ended by “infecting” the public, who wanted to contribute with research suggestions and more comprehensive questions about the knowledge of provenances of other azulejo (tile) collections in Portugal.

Vera Mariz
É investigadora integrada do ARTIS – Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Actualmente desenvolve um pós-doutoramento sobre Mercados de Arte em Portugal (1833-1945), com uma bolsa da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. É doutorada em História/História da Arte, Património e Restauro (2016) e mestre em Arte, Património e Teoria do Restauro (2011), ambos pela mesma instituição. Os seus interesses de investigação, habitualmente focados nos séculos XIX e XX, são história das colecções, mercados de arte e história da teoria do restauro. Tem publicado vários artigos em revistas científicas nacionais e internacionais, assim como livros e capítulos de livros.

Fábio Ricardo
É bolseiro de investigação do ARTIS – Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, onde trabalha nos projectos Az Infinitum – Sistema de Referência e Indexação de Azulejo e ORION – Art collections and collectors in Portugal. Actualmente encontra-se a iniciar o mestrado em História da Arte e Património na mesma faculdade. Os seus principais interesses de investigação são a arqueologia, a história antiga, o azulejo e a fotografia.

Rosário Salema de Carvalho
É investigadora integrada do ARTIS – Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, desenvolvendo actividade no Az – Rede de Investigação em Azulejo (grupo a que pertence desde 2007), onde é bolseira de pós-doutoramento da FCT (tendo como instituição de acolhimento o ARTIS e o MNAz) com um projecto de investigação dedicado às molduras do azulejo barroco. É doutorada em História da Arte e Mestre em Arte Património e Restauro pela mesma instituição. Tem desenvolvido investigação na área da azulejaria portuguesa, com vários artigos publicados em revistas científicas nacionais e internacionais, assim como livros e capítulos de livros.

Vera Mariz
Researcher at ARTIS (History of Art Institute, School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon), Vera Mariz is currently developing a post-doctoral project on the Portuguese Art Market (1833-1945), which was awarded with a Foundation for Science and Technology post-doctoral fellowship. She has a PhD in History / Art History, Art, Heritage and Restoration (2016) and a Master’s Degree in Art, Heritage and Restoration Theory (2011), both from the School of Arts and Humanities (ULisboa). Her research interests, generally limited to the 19th and 20th centuries, are in the areas of history of collecting, art market, and history of architectural restoration. She has published several articles in national and international scientific journals, as well as book chapters and a book.

Fábio Ricardo
With a grant from ARTIS (History of Art Institute, School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon) Fábio Ricardo works in the projects Az Infinitum — Azulejo Indexation and Referencing System and ORION – Art collections and collectors in Portugal. Currently he is starting a MA in History of Art and Heritage at the same university. His main research interests are archeology, ancient history, azulejo and photography.

Rosário Salema de Carvalho
Researcher at ARTIS (History of Art Institute, School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon), and executive coordinator of the group Az – Azulejo Research Network. She has a PhD in History / Art History (2012), from the School of Arts and Humanities (ULisboa) and a Master’s Degree in Art, Heritage and Restoration Theory from the same School (2007), both with theses about Baroque Azulejos. Currently developing a post-doctoral research (awarded by Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT), dedicated to the issue of frames in Baroque tile decorations, hosted by ARTIS (Az) and the National Azulejo Museum, Rosário Salema de Carvalho is the author of several books and articles on Portuguese azulejos published in national and international scientific journals.
