Azulejos (tiles) are ceramic plaques of various shapes and volumes, wall coverings, giving them identity, protection and flexibility. Like the scales of a fish, the tiled walls accompany the rapid movement, the distracted passage, the inattentive gaze, converting themselves into afterimages populating memory. They promote comfort through the body’s involvement, they provide framing and orchestrate rhythms, they identify spaces and transform them into places.
The tile is a vehicle of concepts enunciated by the plastic expression, it is support of graphics and colour, it is reflection and vibration, figuration and abstraction, module and pattern, proposing different rhythms given by the repetition of the compositions. Of industrial or handmade production, the tile, constitutes a transnational language, assuming regional characteristics.
Tile is also fragment and gap, the clue given by the parcel or questioning caused by the absence. An integral part of an ancient and timeless puzzle.
Since the blue of Babylon that the tile is an object of desire, a symptom of civilization and a subject of greed, a symbol of eternal search and fascination with scintillation. For me, it is also the lemon-yellow road, the “follow the yellow brick road,” which leads to the emerald city of Oz, the representation of belief in illusion.
