Azulejo e Arquitectura

Azulejo and Architecture
The specificity of the azulejo, century-long artistic practice in Portuguese heritage, throughout the modern and contemporary eras, has stood out (and still stands out) with remarkable originality in its scenic articulation with Architecture’s forms and spaces. Tile-covered façades, both figurative and patterned, as well as the inner rooms of private houses, urban stairwells, palace chambers, domestic chapels and oratories, courtyards, park benches and other settings of social life bear witness to the vividness of an endless dialogue between built shapes and ceramic motifs, unparalleled in other cultural contexts outside the so-called “Portuguese world”. This sublime dialogic expression, profiting from chromatic effects and variable luminous nuances, helps shape the Portuguese proneness to sui generis forms of language, undoubtedly original and daring, and dilutes the frontiers traditionally set between erudite and vernacular art, turning them into a symbiotic interplay of outstanding charm.
This kind of heritage, although unique for its diversity and quantity, is often jeopardised by the insensitivity of governing entities and construction campaigns, which calls for an increased effort in its systematic study, thorough inventory, preventive care and safeguard – as has been claimed, for a long time, by experts such as Santos Simões, Mário Barata, Dora Alcântara, Irisalva Moita, José Meco, and various other façade historians. The recent work by Ana Almeida, exploring the intimate relationship between the use of azulejos and architectural design, during the project phase, paves the way to a closer definition of these constructive and decorative processes, as well as to the overall aesthetic options they resort to, which speak in Portuguese. This kind of solutions makes use of a language that incorporates several original features, repeated in countless variants throughout the “Portuguese world”.
The focus on this multi-layered heritage is also present in an approach by Ana Mehnert Pascoal, in her book “A cidade do saber”, which deals with the artistic heritage integrated in the buildings designed by Porfírio Pardal Monteiro for the campus of the University of Lisbon, between 1934 and 1961. The work highlights the building surfaces covered with azulejos, designed by contemporary artists such as Hein Semke, Fred Kradolfer, Querubim Lapa or Jorge Barradas.
