Session Overview
The AzLab#30, dedicated to the azulejo in context: the manor house, had as guests the researchers Helder Carita and Ana Paula Rebelo Correia, and was moderated by Alexandra Gago da Câmara.
Helder Carita began by outlining the main objectives of the project “The Manor House in Lisboa and Rio de Janeiro. An Inside View”, which gave the motto to this session, by using the website where the inventory of several palaces located in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro is gathered. Thinking about the future, the researcher talked of the possibility of integrating Goa in this context.
Ana Paula Rebelo Correia approached the azulejos of the manor houses, focusing her attention on issues such as the importance of the azulejo in the understanding of the function of certain spaces or in the relation between the themes and the spaces of application, illustrating profusely the themes most represented: everyday and leisure, military and battle scenes, mythology and allegories.
The debate was well-attended, and the existence or not of iconographic programs as well as the problems of copies or the perception that we have today of these 18th century interiors, continue to be discussed.
