Abstract

The Victoria and Albert Museum houses over 17,000 tiles and tile panels, mainly from Europe and the Middle East. Of these, around thirty were either produced or used in Portugal, ranging from sixteenth-century tiles from the Sintra Palace to pieces presented at the London Annual International Exhibition of 1871. This talk will give a broad overview of the V&A tile collection, its storage and display, and then investigate the different routes through which tiles with Portuguese connections have made their way into the collection.
