Em Abril mergulhamos no mundo da cor! 

Os investigadores do projecto ChromAz – The Chromatic Journey of the Portuguese Azulejo apresentam os principais objectivos desta investigação multidisciplinar, que pretende traçar uma história da azulejaria portuguesa através da cor, estudando a evolução cromática e descobrindo as receitas de produção.

Que cores e tonalidades caracterizaram a paleta azulejar até meados do século XVIII? Que pigmentos foram usados e como eram produzidos? Seriam estes pigmentos diferentes dos usados em outras produções europeias? Como evoluíram as cores e a tecnologia ao longo do tempo? Será possível esclarecer questões de proveniência e datação com base na composição química das cores?

Neste AzLab serão também partilhados alguns dos resultados iniciais obtidos ao longo do primeiro ano de trabalho. É mesmo uma sessão a não perder!

In April we will plunge into the world of colour! 

The researchers from ChromAz – The Chromatic Journey of the Portuguese Azulejo will present some of the main goals of this multidisciplinary project, which aims to retrace the history of Portuguese azulejos through their colours, by studying their chromatic evolution and uncovering different production techniques. 

Which colours and hues characterized the azulejo’s palette until the mid-18th century? Which pigments were used and how were they made? Do they differ from the ones used in coeval European tile productions? How did they change over time? Is it possible to address provenance and chronological issues based on pigment composition?

In this AzLab we will also get to know some of the results achieved during the project’s first year. In short, this is a session you will not want to miss!

Resumo

Kilomètre 47 é o nome de um painel de azulejaria elaborado em 1943 pela artista Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (1908-1992). Instalado no antigo refeitório estudantil da Universidade Rural, situada na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, o painel é composto por oito quadros visualmente unificados por faixas e cercaduras que, além de funcionar como rodapé, contornam todas as portas e janelas do salão, de modo a integrar a obra com o projeto arquitetónico assinado por Eduardo da Veiga Soares. À luz do conceito de sintoma, formulado por Georges Didi-Huberman, a apresentação visa examinar a presença do imaginário da arte não-erudita lusitana para a caracterização dos componentes figurativos e para a inserção de elementos abstratos-geométricos nas faixas e cercaduras do painel. Deste modo, interessa-nos verificar, no ambivalente jogo entre figuração e abstração, recorrente na obra pictórica de Vieira da Silva, o significado desta peculiar realização para o encontro da artista com suas memórias e com as tradições coletivas.

Abstract

Kilomètre 47 is the name of a tile panel created in 1943 by the artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (1908-1992). Placed in the former student canteen of the Universidade Rural, in Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan area, the panel comprises eight sections united by bands and borders, which act as a skirting element and outline all of the room’s doors and windows, in direct dialogue with the architectural project designed by Eduardo da Veiga Soares. Borrowing the concept of symptom, formulated by Georges Didi-Huberman, this presentation aims to examine the importance of Portuguese non-erudite art for the definition of the panel’s figurative components and the inclusion of abstract geometric elements on the bands and borders. Accordingly, we are interested in exploring, amid the ambiguous interplay between figuration and abstraction that is typical of Vieira da Silva’s pictorial work, the significance of this peculiar piece for the artist’s engagement with her own memories and different collective traditions.

Helio Herbst é graduado, mestre e doutor pela Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo. Professor do Departamento de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro e coordenador do Grupo de Pesquisas em Expressão, Representação e Análise da Forma em Arquitetura e Urbanismo, na mesma instituição. Membro do Grupo Museu/Patrimônio da FAU/USP e do Núcleo de Pesquisa em Património e Memória da UFRRJ. Pesquisador visitante do DINÂMIA’CET-IUL, no qual realizou, em 2021, uma etapa de investigação do pós-doutoramento “Na espessura do plano: as narrativas plasmadas pelos painéis de azulejaria concebidos por Vieira da Silva para o refeitório da Universidade Rural”, sob supervisão da professora Paula André.

Invited speaker:
Helio Herbst [Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil]

Helio Herbst holds a BA, an MA and a PhD in Architecture and Urban Planning by the University of São Paulo. He teaches at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro and coordinates the Research Group on the Expression, Representation and Analysis of Form in Architecture and Urban Planning, at the same institution. He is a member of FAU/USP’s Museum/Heritage research group and UFRRJ’s Research Centre on Heritage and Memory. He is also a visiting researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-IUL, where he developed, in 2021, part of his postdoctoral research, entitled In the depth of an image: the narratives conveyed by Vieira da Silva’s tile panels for the refectory of the Rural University, supervised by Paula André.
