PIOUS WISHES: EMBLEMS FOR DEVOTIONAL FORMATION IN THE RELIGIOUS PORTUGUESE AZULEJO WORK OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE XVIII CENTURY

Abstract

For several decades now, and especially from the 1990s, we have had an increasingly wide knowledge of the existence in Portugal of various iconographic programs on blue and white azulejos, carried out mainly during the first decades of the 18th century, whose compositions are directly inspired by emblematic books of devotional and doctrinal orientation published during the previous century. Some of them (at least five) come from the most popular and influential works of the genre such as the Schola cordis and the Regia via crucis by Benedictus van Haeften (published for the first time, respectively, in Antwerp, Hieronymus Verdussen, 1629; and Antwerp, Officina Plantiniana/Balthasar Moretus, 1635), or the Pia desideria of the Jesuit priest Hermann Hugo (editio princeps: Antwerp, Henricus Aertsenius, 1624), books that enjoyed numerous later editions and translations into several languages.

Among these ceramic programmes are the panels, now reinstalled in the upper galleries of the cloister of the Convent of Madre de Deus/National Azulejo Museum, in Lisbon, based on the aforementioned works by van Haeften, and from the former Augustinian convent of Grilos . Emblematic compositions from both authors can also be seen on the tiles in the sacristy of the convent of Santo António do Varatojo (Torres Vedras). To these must be added two separate programmes based on the Pia desideria engravings, preserved in the Brotherhood House of Church of Santa Cruz, in Santarem, and in the Chapter House of the convent of Santa Marta, in Lisbon. The repertoire closes, for the moment, with another programme identified by Professor Reyes Escalera Pérez on the walls of the Beja Cathedral, also inspired by engravings of the Pia desideria.

All these programmes respond to a trend that was generalised especially in the central area of Portugal during the second quarter of the 18th century, resorting to the use of series of allegorical compositions in rooms (refectories, sacristies …) of churches and monastic complexes, particularly of a feminine nature. These compositions were based on emblematic images that, according to Ignatius de Loyola’s meditation system, were used as a visual starting point to stimulate devotion or the main monastic virtues.

In this presentation, we will offer a study of these five programs inspired by the treatises of both authors, also developing a comprehensive analysis that addresses 1) the functional nature or characteristics of the physical spaces where they are located; 2) their possible authorship; 3) the emblems selection criteria and; 4) the specific message that these compositions propose based on the chosen images.
