Que temas relacionados com azulejo estão a ser estudados nas universidades? De que forma conhecer e mapear as investigações em curso pode contribuir para uma história da arte, e do azulejo, em particular, mais colaborativa e articulada? Desde a licenciatura até ao doutoramento, queremos saber o que se investiga actualmente em Portugal e no mundo! Esta é uma oportunidade única para partilhar e debater as mais recentes perspectivas de investigação em azulejo, nas suas diversas vertentes.

O AzLab é um seminário mensal que decorre na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, cujo objectivo é criar novas perspectivas de análise sobre questões relacionadas com o azulejo, entre as quais a investigação, o inventário, o coleccionismo, a salvaguarda, a criação ou a divulgação do azulejo. O AzLab#52 especial é uma conferência de um dia com call for papers.

SUBMISSÃO DE RESUMOS
Aceitam-se propostas entre 500 (mínimo) e 900 palavras (máximo) para apresentações de 15 minutos, seguidas de debate. Os resumos devem ser enviados para redeazulejo@letras.ulisboa.pt até ao dia 12 de Junho de 2019, acompanhados por uma breve biografia (máximo 300 palavras) e 4 palavras-chave. A selecção das propostas, através do processo de revisão por pares, decorrerá até dia 5 de Julho e os participantes serão informados do resultado nessa data.

NOTA: A presente chamada de artigos aplica-se apenas a trabalhos de investigação em desenvolvimento, não incluindo resumos directamente resultantes de dissertações ou teses já defendidas à data do evento.

Deadline: June 12th, 2019

What subjects related to azulejo (tile) are being studied in universities? In what way can know and mapping the ongoing investigations contribute to a history of art, and tile, in particular, more collaborative and articulated? From undergraduate to PhD, we want to know what is currently being researched in Portugal and in the world! This is a unique opportunity to share and debate the latest perspectives on tile research in its various aspects.

The AzLab is a monthly seminar at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. It aims to create new analytical perspectives on issues related to azulejos, including its research, inventory, collecting, safeguarding and its creation or dissemination. The special AzLab#52 is a one-day conference with call for papers.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
This one-day conference invites proposals between 500 (minimum) and 900 words (maximum) for 15 minute presentations, followed by a debate. The abstracts should be sent to redeazulejo@letras.ulisboa.pt until June 12th, 2019, accompanied by a brief biography (maximum 300 words) and 4 keywords. The proposals selection through the peer review process will run until July 5th and the participants will be informed of the outcome by that date.

NOTE: This call for papers only applies to research papers in development, and will not include summaries directly resulting from dissertations or theses already defended at the time of the event.

Nuno Rosmaninho
Nasceu em 1964 e é professor associado com agregação do Departamento de Línguas e Culturas da Universidade de Aveiro, para onde entrou como assistente estagiário em 1991. Licenciado em História, variante de História da Arte, pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (1987), onde também realizou o mestrado em História Contemporânea de Portugal, com uma tese intitulada Historiografia Artística Portuguesa: De Raczynski ao dealbar do Estado Novo (1993), e o doutoramento, intitulado O Poder da Arte. O Estado Novo e a Cidade Universitária de Coimbra (2002), publicado pela Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra em 2006. Em 2014, realizou provas de agregação em Estudos Culturais na Universidade de Aveiro, apresentando um relatório da unidade curricular de Identidade Artística Portuguesa e uma lição subordinada ao título A Deriva Nacional da Arte. Portugal, séculos XIX-XXI.

THE AZULEJOS OF COIMBRA CAMPUS UNIVERSITY

Nuno Rosmaninho [Universidade de Aveiro]

Nuno Rosmaninho
He was born in 1964, and currently is Associated Professor (with “agregação”) of the Department of Languages and Cultures, University of Aveiro, in which he started as as assistant intern in 1991. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in History of Art from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (1987) and a Master’s degree in Contemporary Portuguese History (1993) from the same University with dissertation entitled History of Portuguese Art: From Raczynski to the beginnings of the “Estado Novo” (dictatorship regime). His doctoral thesis (2002, University of Coimbra) about The Power of the Arts, the “Estado Novo” and the University City of Coimbra was published by the Coimbra University Press in 2006. In 2014, he carried through his aggregation in Cultural Studies at University of Aveiro, presenting a report from the Identidade Artística Portuguesa curricular unit and a lesson entitle A Deriva Nacional da Arte. Portugal, séculos XIX-XXI. His research interests are Portuguese artistic identity and History of Portuguese Art.

Licenciada em Arquitectura pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Lisboa, em 1996, Catarina Almada Negreiros estagiou no atelier londrino MUF: ART/ARCHITECTURE entre 1997 e 1999. Em 2002 concluiu o mestrado em arquitectura na G.S.D. Universidade de Harvard e, em 2011, o mestrado em Comunicação e Artes, na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Anos antes, em 2000, tinha fundado, com a sua irmã Rita Almada Negreiros, os ateliers de Santa Catarina, em Lisboa.

Licenciada em Arquitectura pela Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa, em 1994, Rita Almada Negreiros estagiou nos ateliers Wilmotte & Associés, em Paris (1994-1997) e BCQ Arquitectes (1997-1998) e ainda no atelier do arquitecto Jordi Castel (1998-1999), estes últimos em Barcelona. Em 2000, fundou, com a sua irmã Catarina Almada Negreiros, os ateliers de Santa Catarina, em Lisboa.

Graduated in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon in 1996, Catarina Almada Negreiros did an internship at the London studio MUF: ART/ARCHITECTURE between 1997 and 1999. In 2002 she completed her master’s degree in architecture at G.S.D. Harvard University and, in 2011, the master’s degree in Communication and Arts, at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Years before, in 2000, she had founded, with her sister Rita Almada Negreiros, the Santa Catarina ateliers, in Lisbon.

Depois de várias passagens por ateliers de arquitectura em Londres, Paris e Barcelona, Catarina Almada Negreiros e Rita Almada Negreiros regressam a Lisboa no ano 2000, onde fundam os Ateliers de Santa Catarina, um centro criativo que promove trabalhos interdisciplinares entre arquitectos, artistas e designers. O trabalho das duas arquitectas – CAN RAN arquitectura – inicia-se neste contexto, e as propostas de renovação arquitectónica destacam-se também pela utilização do azulejo enquanto elemento transformador dos espaços em que se insere.

Nesta primeira sessão do AzLab em Ovar, e na sequência do AzLab#44, dedicada aos seus projectos em azulejo, Catarina e Rita Almada Negreiros propõem uma análise detalhada a algumas das suas obras em Lisboa, destacando a intervenção “Cota Zero”, no novo átrio da Estação Sul e Sueste (2011); o revestimento “Vai-Vem”, aplicado nos muros laterais do elevador da Bica (2013); o tratamento plástico de um muro junto ao Paço da Rainha intitulado “5pm” (2016); ou o revestimento exterior de um imóvel na Av. da Índia (2016). Para além destes trabalhos já finalizados, Catarina e Rita Almada Negreiros irão ainda abordar algumas experiências que estão a desenvolver e outros projectos futuros.

After several visits to architecture studios in London, Paris, and Barcelona, Catarina Almada Negreiros and Rita Almada Negreiros returned to Lisbon in 2000, where they founded the Santa Catarina Ateliers, a creative center that promotes interdisciplinary work between architects, artists, and designers. The work of the two architects – CAN RAN arquitectura – begins in this context, and the architectural renewal proposals stand out also for the use of the azulejo (tile) as a space transforming element in which it is inserted.

In this first session of AzLab in Ovar, and following the AzLab#44, dedicated to their tile projects, Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros propose a detailed analysis of some of their works in Lisbon, highlighting the intervention “Cota Zero”, in the new atrium of the Sul and Sueste Station (2011); the covering “Vai-Vem”, applied on the side walls of the Bica lift (2013); the plastic treatment of a wall next to the Palace of the Queen entitled “5pm” (2016); or the exterior covering of a property on Av. da Índia (2016). In addition to these already completed works, Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros will also discuss some experiences they are developing and other future projects.

AzLab spoiler alert!

Após 5 anos e quase a atingir as 50 sessões, o AzLab continua activo em Lisboa mas… vai ter um pólo mais a Norte! O #AzLabOvar tem início no próximo mês de Maio, em regime experimental, com duas sessões agendadas no âmbito do Maio do Azulejo*. Não percam as novidades nos próximos dias!

* O “Maio do Azulejo” é uma iniciativa da Câmara Municipal de Ovar, que tem como principal objectivo promover o património azulejar daquela que é considerada a *Cidade Museu Vivo do Azulejo*. Direccionado para vários públicos, integra um conjunto significativo de actividades dedicadas ao azulejo, nas suas múltiplas vertentes – patrimonial, turística, artística e lúdica.

After 5 years and almost reaching the 50 sessions, AzLab is still active in Lisbon but … it is going to have one more hub in the North of the country! The #AzLabOvar will begin next May, on a trial basis, with two sessions scheduled due to the May of the Azulejo*. Do not miss the upcoming  news in the next few days!

* The “May of the Azulejo” is an initiative of the Ovar Municipal Council, whose main objective is to promote the tile heritage of what is considered the *City of the Azulejo Living Museum*. Directed to several publics, it integrates a significant set of activities dedicated to the tile, in its multiple aspects – patrimonial, tourist, artistic and playful.

THE AZULEJOS OF COIMBRA CAMPUS UNIVERSITY

The azulejos (tiles) commissioned for the new Coimbra campus university (1941-1975) give the motto to the next AzLab, in which Nuno Rosmaninho, one of the researchers who have worked the most on national and totalitarian art issues, will analyze these tileworks in the light of the “artistic and ideological discourses of Estado Novo”.
