Resumo
Na década de 1940, quando o Atelier de Cerâmica Osirarte criou os revestimentos que integraram importantes edificações modernas, a arte azulejar se tornou uma espécie de signo de brasilidade, que personalizou, mundialmente, a vanguarda arquitetônica made in Brasil. O sucesso dos azulejos nesses empreendimentos contribuiu para que fossem continuamente utilizados no decorrer do século XX, originando um conjunto diversificado pela influência de outras ideias, tendências e movimentos que, então, seguiam transformando a arquitetura nacional.
Infelizmente esta pluralidade não é contemplada na historiografia oficial que, direta ou indiretamente, disserta a respeito do tema, tendo em vista que ela não o faz em função do azulejo e, sim, pelo valor atribuído aos edifícios ou à participação de alguns personagens que, ao longo do tempo, se destacaram nos campos da arte e da arquitetura. Tudo o mais que não está inscrito nestes recortes, geralmente, permanece invisibilizado.
Pelo exposto, com base na análise de documentos oficiais e, principalmente, no estudo sistematizado de noventa e três livros, manuscritos, inéditos, que guardam registros de mais de três décadas de produção azulejar no atelier do ceramista alemão Udo Knoff, situado em Salvador, Bahia, essa conferência, protagonizando o azulejo, pretende desconstruir alguns mitos e meias verdades, possibilitando uma compreensão mais ampla e consistente sobre as singularidades artísticas, técnicas, sociais e econômicas, responsáveis pela presença marcante dos revestimento cerâmico autoral na arquitetura moderna do Brasil.

TILES IN MODERN BRAZILIAN ARCHITECTURE: BEYOND PORTINARI

Abstract
In the 1940s, when the tile coverings created by the pottery workshop Osirarte were applied in important modern buildings, tile decorations became a sort of symbol of “Brazilianness”, which led to a worldwide recognition of the architectural avant-garde “made in Brazil”. The success of the tiles applied in these buildings contributed to their continual use throughout the 20th century, giving rise to a diverse set of works, influenced by the ideas, tendencies and movements that were shaping the country’s architecture.
Unfortunately, this plurality was not taken into account by the official historiography directly or indirectly concerned with this topic, which focuses not on the tile decorations but on the value ascribed to the buildings and the participation of a group of figures that stood out, throughout the decades, in the fields of art and architecture. Whatever falls outside these lines of approach usually remains invisible.
For this reason, and based on the analysis of official documents and, above all, the systematic study of ninety-three unpublished books – containing records of more than three decades of tile production by the workshop of the German ceramist Udo Knoff, located in Salvador, Bahia – this paper focuses on the tiles themselves and aims to deconstruct a few myths and half-truths, so as to enable a wider and more consistent understanding of the artistic, technical, social and economic singularities behind the strong presence of authored ceramic coverings in modern Brazilian architecture.
