Em Abril, o AzLab viaja até Ghent, onde o investigador belga Mario Baeck desenvolve o seu projecto de pós-doutoramento dedicado às fontes de inspiração e influências internacionais na produção de azulejos. Nesta sessão, Mario Baeck explora um tema ainda pouco estudado: os catálogos das fábricas como fonte de informação privilegiada para melhor compreender o uso de azulejos nos interiores dos séculos XIX e XX; o gosto e as encomendas; assim como a circulação de motivos e formas na Europa e no mundo. TILED INTERIORS ON PAPER. TRADE CATALOGUES AS A KEY SOURCE TO UNDERSTAND THE USE OF TILES IN EUROPEAN INTERIORS

In April, AzLab travels to Belgium, where the researcher Mario Baeck is developing a postdoctoral project on the sources of inspiration and the international trends that have shaped tile production. In this session, Mario Baeck will explore a little-studied topic: the recourse to factory catalogues as unique sources of information for a better understanding of tiled interiors from the 19th and 20th centuries, the prevailing taste and commissions, and the circulation of decorative shapes and motifs in Europe and around the world. Resumo

Entre os finais do século XVII e inícios do século XIX, Coimbra afirma-se através da sua produção azulejar, tal como testemunha a ampla disseminação de núcleos in situ, produtos das suas olarias, remanescentes sobretudo na faixa central do território continental português.

Apesar desta produção alternativa à da metrópole seguir os princípios que regeram a aplicação decorativa do azulejo setecentista, bem como as linhas principais da sua evolução formal e estética, gerou-se uma especificidade local, com amplo impacto nos territórios da sua área de influência. Vários aspectos distintivos fazem com que reconheçamos com alguma facilidade o azulejo de Coimbra dentro da hegemonia dos produtos lisboetas, sendo substanciais as clivagens com a produção mainstream coeva de Lisboa, notando-se, para além de assumidas limitações técnicas, soluções formais e uma escolha de repertórios iconográficos pouco convencionais.

Nesta comunicação partilharemos uma visão de síntese sobre o azulejo de Coimbra, enfatizando, para lá dos seus aspectos de excepcionalidade, também a sua sólida coerência evolutiva, fruto de uma troca sucessiva de experiências por parte dos seus intervenientes, propiciada por laços de conjugais e laços de sangue no tempo lato da centúria de Setecentos.

O legado deste património azulejar vem comprovar que escrever o capítulo da azulejaria portuguesa do século XVIII sem a necessária abordagem à produção de Coimbra, será sempre uma visão incompleta. Além de Lisboa, temos também o azulejo de Coimbra, como bem demonstra o expressivo património azulejar que sobrevive, e que merece ser salvaguardado.

Abstract

From the late 17th century to the early 19th century, Coimbra stood out for its tile production, as shown by the ample dissemination of in situ tile decorations produced by the city’s potters and particularly frequent in the central area of mainland Portugal.

This output, which rivalled that of the metropolis, followed the main principles governing 18th century tile decorations and accompanied their formal and aesthetic evolution. However, a local specificity emerged, with considerable impact in its area of influence. Several distinctive features allow for a relatively easy identification of Coimbra’s tiles amid the hegemony of Lisbon’s production. The substantial differences that set them apart from the mainstream decorations produced in the capital during the same period include, aside from obvious technical limitations, the adoption of unconventional formal solutions and iconographic motifs.

This presentation will offer an overview of Coimbra’s tile production and its unique features. We will also highlight the coherence of its evolution, due to the continual exchanges between the participants in the production process, fostered by marital and blood ties throughout the 18th century.

The legacy of this artistic heritage shows that any account of Portugal’s 18th century tile decorations that fails to mention Coimbra’s tile production will remain incomplete. Apart from Lisbon’s azulejos , there are also Coimbra’s azulejos, as demonstrated by the unique tile decorations that have survived to this day, and which are well worth preserving.

Diana Gonçalves dos Santos [Az – Rede de Investigação em Azulejo (ARTIS-IHA/FLUL)]

Diana Gonçalves dos Santos (1980) especializou-se em História da Arte Portuguesa através da sua actividade académica e prática profissional como investigadora freelancer. Foi bolseira da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (BI e BD), apoio fundamental ao aprofundamento das suas capacidades técnicas no campo da História da Arte. Em 2014, obteve o Doutoramento na área, grau conferido pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. 

No ano seguinte, ruma à Região Autónoma dos Açores para abraçar um novo desafio profissional ao serviço do ARQUIPÉLAGO – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, equipamento cultural no qual contribui na fase de instalação e sequentes primeiros quatro anos de actividade. Desde 2019, desempenha funções como Técnica Superior nos serviços centrais da Direcção Regional da Cultura, em Angra do Heroísmo. 

Conta com vários trabalhos publicados, sob a forma de artigos em revistas científicas, catálogos de exposições e capítulos de livros da especialidade. Apesar da dedicação que votou em boa parte do seu percurso académico ao estudo da azulejaria, particularmente à produção de Coimbra do século XVIII, interessa-se, de igual modo, por outras expressões artísticas fora do quadrado.

Diana Gonçalves dos Santos [Az – Rede de Investigação em Azulejo (ARTIS-IHA/FLUL)]

Diana Gonçalves dos Santos (1980) specialized in Portuguese Art History through her academic activity and professional practice as freelance researcher. She was awarded a doctoral scholarship and a research fellowship by the Foundation for Science and Technology which were instrumental for the development of her technical skills in the field of Art History. She concluded her PhD in this field, by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, in 2014.

In the following year, she moved to the Azores to embrace a new professional challenge: contributing to the installation and the first four years of activity of ARQUIPÉLAGO – Contemporary Arts Centre. In 2019 she started working as a senior technician in the central services of the Regional Directorate for Culture, in Angra do Heroísmo.

Her various publications include articles in scientific journals and exhibition catalogues and chapters in specialized books. Despite her dedication, throughout a considerable part of her academic career, to the study of azulejos – and particularly of Coimbra’s 18th century tile production – she is also interested in other art forms.
