THE RETURN TO FIGURATION. THE PORTUGUESE AZULEJOS OF THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Session overview
Searching for a name for a new aesthetic … it was with this challenge that Tiago Borges Lourenço began, and finished, AzLab#50, dedicated to Portuguese azulejos (tiles) in the transition to the 20th century. Over the course of an hour, the researcher contextualized the azulejo painting of the time, describing their main characteristics, both in terms of the color palette and the themes represented, highlighting the painters Pereira Cão and Jorge Colaço. But Tiago Borges Lourenço insisted, above all, on a global vision of the azulejos, showing all its immense diversity, the reason for the difficulty in assigning them a designation.
If the appearance of this new aesthetic was gradual, imposing itself in the 1930s, a period that dates back to the coverings great majority, its disappearance was much more abrupt and, in the early 1940s, the commissions of great azulejo programmes disappear: the Estado Novo did not defend this type of ceramic production and António Ferro pushed the azulejo in a new direction, and changing its path.
The session ended with Tiago Borges Lourenço referring to the distance that today historiography begins to manifest in relation to this period, and which, hopefully, can open the way to the understanding of a time with a very rich programmatic side that is worth to comprehend. Although none of the suggestions for designations has succeeded, the discussion that followed also dealt with the work processes of painters and the work of others less known.
