Abstract

It is widely recognised that the decoration of objects and spaces, and the development of complex technologies defines our spaces. Our combined dexterity, creativity and ability to cooperate has enabled us to manipulate our environment and connect with each other on a global scale. Pre-industrial making techniques and the proliferation of technology are often seen as opposing forces, one favouring the local – the development of vernacular language and context the other favouring global processes – optimisation and standardisation.

In this lecture, we will see how traditional ceramic techniques and digital engineering processes can be used together to produce more meaningful and sustainable architectural surfaces.

ECAlab investigates the possibilities of ceramics for sustainable architectural technologies while examining the role of advanced digital technologies alongside traditional ceramic craftsmanship skills. At ECAlab we are concerned with exploring how the universal and optimised engineered architectural component developed in a scientific environment can be appropriated and further developed locally, benefitting from and supporting heritage and local identity, recognising the indispensable involvement of art and craftsmanship in these processes. We believe in innovation through the fusion of past and present production methodologies and the collaboration between different disciplines, with the aim to generate more meaningful buildings that foster both environmental and social sustainability.

ECAlab operates as a collaborative platform. It is part of an international network of eight universities from four different countries (UK, USA, Spain and Germany), and it has also developed its own collaborative experience in the UK, bridging disciplinary boundaries and bringing together researchers, students and designers with leading professionals, industry and ceramic artists. The programme includes high-profile speakers, training in specialist software (parametric and algorithmic design, CAD/CAM techniques for ceramic materials, environmental design simulation tools) and training in ceramics manufacturing techniques. The resulting projects use digital platforms to design forms and utilise file to factory techniques, which are then ultimately interpreted by time served craftsmen to generate bespoke and crafted pieces. This final stage engages ceramic artists to share their expertise and to harness the unique qualitative expression of ceramics as a material. These final pieces or prototypes, developed by our collaborating artists, are showcased in our exhibitions and events.

Since 2011, ECAlab has engaged 160 students, produced 85 innovative designs and 46 full-scale physical prototypes in collaboration with 22 professional artists that explore the innovative use of clay in architecture. Through research on the use of ceramics as a sustainable material, ECAlab has had an impact on the commercial development of new materials, inspired ceramic artists to work in new ways, influenced education and had an impact on the architectural profession and the general public through exhibitions, symposia, publications, films, research programmes and workshops developed in collaboration with influential institutions like RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), TATE, or the Building Centre.
