Invited speaker:
Aydan Aghabayli [Politecnico di Milano]

Master of architecture with experience in research, architectural design and computation. Worked as a research assistant in Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Institute of Art and Architecture and in several architectural offices in Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Finished Master Degree in the Faculty of Architecture University of Lisbon, with final research topic “A Parametric Envision of Portuguese and Azerbaijan Islamic Geometric Patterns” where the Islamic Geometry was analyzed in terms of parametric rules and investigated the possibilities of creating a parametric pattern.

Currently obtaining my second specialized Master degree in BIM in Politecnico di Milano and continuing research on the link of architectural heritage to computation.

Actualmente a realizar o seu segundo mestrado em Building Information Modelling (BIM), Aydan Aghabayli continua a explorar a relação entre o património arquitectónico e a computação. Aydan Aghabayli, from Azerbaijan, explores the use of Islamic geometric motifs in Portuguese tiles. This subject was part of her Master’s thesis, entitled “A Parametric Envision of Portuguese and Azerbaijan Islamic Geometric Patterns”. Currently enrolled in a second Master’s programme, on Building Information Modelling (BIM), Aydan Aghabayli continues to explore the relationship between architectural heritage and computation. What new perspectives will he bring to tile studies? Curious? Then be sure to attend!

Abstract

This talk will look at the wide range of religious scenes shown on Dutch and Portuguese tiles and examine how biblical stories and events in the life of saints have been depicted by Dutch and Portuguese tile painters over the centuries. There will also be an exposition of how tiles with religious scenes were used for devotional practices by Portuguese Catholics and Dutch Protestants in private and public locations.

Hans van Lemmen is a tile historian, author and lecturer and is the current President of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society. He has curated several exhibitions on tiles, and is the author of numerous books including “Tiles in Architecture” (1993), “Delftware Tiles” (1997) and “5000 Years Of Tiles”  (2013).
