PORTUGUESE ADVERTISING AZULEJO: THE PROJECT
Session overview
A new year, a new room and the usual theme – azulejo (tile)! AzLab#54 was dedicated to Portuguese Advertising Azulejo, and the presentation of this project was made by Isabel Boavida who, between narratives and experiences, explained its origin and mission in two aspects: one intended on the knowledge and safeguarding of the tiled advertising panels heritage, the other attempting to disseminate information and raise awareness, and the involvement of the civil society.
The presentation continued with David Francisco guiding us through the site of Advertising Azulejo and telling about other initiatives to which the project was associated, like articles in various publications, such as the journal Coolectiva or the Guia das Estradas de Portugal, panel cleaning actions or digital reconstruction, among many others. While obeying to an informal spirit, the organization and data structure available today on the Advertising Azulejo website is quite complete, answering questions such as location (allowing for the location of the panel in a general map), and systematization of categories, as well as complete descriptions.
Which led us to the communication by Lara Lourenço, an intern at the Rede de Investigação em Azulejo for two months, who established a bridge between that project and the Az Infinitum system. The student was in charge of analyzing the basic information of the Advertising Azulejo website, adapting it to the inventory norms and inserting it into the system, in similar ways, albeit with other complementarities.
The session ended with a series of Q&A, most notably with the participation of Cristina Carvalho, whose master’s dissertation (2007) deals with the advertising azulejos in Lisbon from the second half of the 19th century to the 2WW.
