O AzLab está de regresso para mais uma temporada cheia de novidades e com um programa muito diversificado!
O ano de 2023 começa com uma homenagem a um dos mais influentes historiadores da arte portuguesa das últimas décadas, que o grupo Az – Rede de Investigação em Azulejo teve o privilégio de ter como coordenador durante largos anos – Vitor Serrão.
Para assinalar a sua jubilação, Vitor Serrão propõe um tema ainda pouco explorado – a pintura sobre azulejo aplicado e o fingimento cenográfico –, continuando deste modo a abrir novos caminhos de investigação também na área da azulejaria portuguesa.
“Se existem características diferenciadoras da arte portuguesa, uma das mais marcantes foi, é, e será no futuro, essa sua imaginosa capacidade de criar novos efeitos cenográficos mesmo quando os recursos são frágeis, as técnicas rudimentares e os materiais singelos. As decorações artísticas dos nossos espaços em estilo chão, sobretudo os da época barroca (mas não apenas esses), ilustram esse talento inato de tirar partido dos meios e processos de fazer, gerando resultados ornamentais visualmente poderosos.
O Azulejo ofereceu-se, neste domínio do engenho, como arma poderosa. Vemos pintura de brutesco associada a azulejos reais e fingidos, à intársia simulada, aos marmoreados fictícios, aos stucchi, esgrafitos, e a outras singulares vias de fingimento artístico: uma obra-prima do nosso engenho de decorar! Por isso, se na arte portuguesa dos séculos XVII e XVIII não encontramos, por certo, a pompa das cortes de Roma e Viena ou da Versailles de Luís XIV (o Rei Sol), existe, sim, uma forma sui generis de afirmar a nossa ardência cenográfica.
Numa época como a actual, em que a História da Arte começa a despertar atenções para tais manifestações decorativas outrora menorizadas pelo gosto dominante, importa revalorizar este uso do azulejo (real ou fictício) como elemento relevante da inovação decorativa portuguesa”.

PAINTING ON APPLIED AZULEJOS AND THE 17TH CENTURY SCENOGRAPHIC SIMULATIONS

2023 kicks off with a homage to one of the most influential Portuguese art historians of the last decades, Vítor Serrão, whom Az – Azulejo Research Network had the honour of having as coordinator for several years.
To mark his retirement, and continuing to open new research paths – also in the field of Portuguese tile studies – Vítor Serrão will address a subject that remains relatively unexplored: the practice of painting on applied azulejos and creating scenic illusions.
“If there are differentiating characteristics in Portuguese art, one of the most striking was, is, and will be in the future, the imaginative ability to create new scenographic effects even when the resources are fragile, the existence of rudimentary techniques and simple materials. The artistic decorations of our estilo chão (plain-style) spaces, especially those from the Baroque era (but not just those), illustrate this innate talent of taking advantage of the known means and processes of making, generating visually powerful ornamental results.
Azulejo (tile) offered itself, in this domain, as a powerful weapon. We see brutesque painting associated with real and fictitious azulejos, simulated intarsia, fictitious marbling, stucchi, graffiti, and other unique ways of artistic pretence: a masterpiece of our ingenuity to decorate! Therefore, if in the 17th and 18th centuries Portuguese art we certainly do not find the splendor of the courts of Rome and Vienna or Louis the 14th’s Versailles (The Sun King), there is, nevertheless, a sui generis way of affirming our scenic ardency.
At a time like the present, when the History of Art begins to attract attention for such decorative manifestations that were once lessened by the dominant preference, it is important to revalue this use of tiles (real or fictitious) as a relevant element of Portuguese decorative innovation”.
