TILED INTERIORS ON PAPER. TRADE CATALOGUES AS A KEY SOURCE TO UNDERSTAND THE USE OF TILES IN EUROPEAN INTERIORS

April 21st, 2021 | 18h00 [UTC] | via Zoom [session to be held in English]

Abstract

The enormous popularity of the decorated industrial wall and floor tile in the 19th and 20th centuries is well known. However, any serious general research on the use of tiles in interiors is very difficult, as access to existing private interiors is in many ways restricted. More than the complicated study of a selection of still existing tile schemes in interiors, the study of trade catalogues of tile factories leads to a better understanding of the general use of the tile in the interior.

Tile catalogues give us a deeper insight in the great variety in use of that material, inform us about the factories that were producing these luxury building products, help us to date the designs more precisely in cases where an exact building year or date of refurbishing is not known, and more general they offer invaluable information on the technical and aesthetic evolution of tiles. Trade catalogues are thus of great importance for a deeper knowledge about the changes in taste in interior architecture. Tile catalogues are also a valuable source for understanding international differences or international influences in matters of style and the huge and worldwide export success of tiles form leading countries as England, Germany, Belgium or France as will be richly illustrated in this presentation.

In April, AzLab travels to Belgium, where the researcher Mario Baeck is developing a postdoctoral project on the sources of inspiration and the international trends that have shaped tile production. In this session, Mario Baeck will explore a little-studied topic: the recourse to factory catalogues as unique sources of information for a better understanding of tiled interiors from the 19th and 20th centuries, the prevailing taste and commissions, and the circulation of decorative shapes and motifs in Europe and around the world. Be sure to join!
