Resumo

Ao longo de cerca de uma hora, Luísa Capucho Arruda traçou a evolução das figuras de convite, desde o que considera serem as precursoras desta tipologia tão específica da azulejaria portuguesa, até ao século XIX. Naturalmente, deteve-se mais tempo no período barroco e, em particular, no reinado de D. João V, mostrando como estas figuras foram adquirindo escala e uma teatralidade cada vez mais evidente, interagindo com os visitantes que recebiam e conduziam através das escadarias das diversas casas em que se encontram (ou encontravam) aplicadas. Foi ainda destacada a sua importância enquanto elementos associados ao ritual de passagem entre o interior e o exterior.

No período de debate, a cronologia das figuras de convite estendeu-se até à contemporaneidade e alargou-se a outras áreas geográficas, como o Brasil.

WELCOMING FIGURES

Session overview

For over an hour, Luísa Capucho Arruda traced the evolution of the welcoming figures, from what she considers to be the forerunners of this typology, so specific of Portuguese tiles, until the 19th century. She spent more time in the Baroque period, and particularly in the reign of King João V, showing how these figures acquired scale and an increasingly theatricality, interacting with the visitors they received and led through the steps of the several houses in which they are (or were) applied. It was also highlighted its importance as elements associated with the ritual of passage between the interior and exterior.

In the debate, the chronology of the welcoming figures was extended until contemporaneity and to other geographic areas, like Brazil.

Luísa Capucho Arruda
Artist and art historian. Drawing, Theory and History of Drawing, Portuguese Tiles and Gender Studies constitute her current research interests. Associate Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidade de Lisboa, she coordinates the Drawing specialty in the Doctoral Course in Fine Arts-Drawing and the Francisco de Holanda Section of the Center for Research and Studies in Fine Arts (CIEBA). She is corresponding member of the Academia Nacional de Belas Arte (National Academy of Fine Arts) of Lisbon.

As figuras de convite representam uma das singularidades da azulejaria portuguesa, que faz parte do imaginário nacional desde o período barroco. De contornos recortados (ou não) e concebidas à escala natural, continham uma forte expressão teatral que apelava aos sentidos do observador. De um modo geral, as figuras de convite personificavam criados de libré, guerreiros ou damas, sendo idealizadas para entradas ou patamares de escadas, onde pretendiam receber os visitantes através do olhar, gestos (que indicavam o percurso) ou frases, mas conheceram múltiplas variantes.

Neste AzLab#39 regressamos a um tema muito especial da história da azulejaria portuguesa – as figuras de convite -, pela mão de Luísa Capucho Arruda, uma das investigadoras que mais aprofundou o estudo das figuras de convite, em particular no período barroco, tema a que dedicou a sua dissertação de mestrado.

WELCOMING FIGURES

The welcoming figures represent one of the singularities of Portuguese azulejos (tiles), since the Baroque period. With cut out contours (or not) and conceived on a natural scale, they contained a strong theatrical expression that appealed to the observer’s senses. In general, the welcoming figures personified livery servants, warriors or ladies, being idealized for entrances or steps of stairs, where they received visitors through a look, gestures (that indicated the route) or phrases, but they knew multiple variants.

In this AzLab#39 we return to a very special theme in the history of Portuguese tiles – the welcoming figures – by the hand of Luísa Capucho Arruda, one of the researchers who further studied the welcoming figures, particularly in the Baroque period, subject to which she devoted her master’s thesis.
